Melissa Merz spearheads a variety of the Podesta Group’s public relations and government relations projects. A seasoned political communications professional, Melissa has worked at the national, state and local levels of government. She utilizes her years of experience to help the firm’s clients develop meaningful and effective messaging campaigns and strategic outreach plans to Congress.
Melissa came to the Podesta Group after serving as Vice President of Communications at the DC-based progressive think tank NDN, where she managed all media outreach and press operations, focusing on Latino and other demographic issues, the economy and the environment. Prior to that, she served as Communications Director for Sen. Ron Wyden (D-OR). Her other Capitol Hill experience includes serving for nearly seven years as press secretary and communications director to now-Senate Majority Whip Dick Durbin (D-IL). On the state level, Melissa served as Communications Director for the successful campaign of then-State Sen. Lisa Madigan for Illinois Attorney General and continued to serve as the spokesperson for Attorney General Madigan until 2006.
