Steve Northrup advises and represents the firm's health care and education clients before Congress and the executive branch, drawing on 20 years of experience in public policy, government relations and communications gained through service as a senior congressional staffer, chief association executive, and an advocate for corporations and nonprofit organizations across a variety of health care sectors. In addition to providing clients with strategic plans for navigating the current political waters, he also keeps clients up-to-date on relevant legislation and advises them on their options at critical decision points.
Prior to joining the Podesta Group, Steve served as Vice President of Federal Affairs at WellPoint, Inc., one of the nation’s leading health benefits companies. Previously, Steve served as the top health advisor to the Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor and Pensions under Chairman Michael Enzi (R-WY). During his time with the HELP Committee, he helped write into law nearly 20 health care bills, including bills related to medical device user fees, biodefense preparedness, health insurance reform and electronic medical records. He also handled Medicare issues for Sen. Enzi, helping draft and pass amendments to the Medicare Modernization Act of 2003. Prior to his service on Capitol Hill, Steve was executive director of the Medical Device Manufacturers Association (MDMA), the national voice for the entrepreneurial sector of the medical device industry, where he was a nationally recognized spokesman for the medical device industry. Steve came to MDMA from Loyola University Medical Center in Illinois, where he held the position of director of government and community relations.
